Freedom From Our Sinful Body

Lately, I’ve been considering why we so often fail the Lord and sin as Christians. I know that these kinds of thoughts must plague many of us often as we attempt to love and serve the Lord as best we know how, even to the extent of keeping us under a cloud of condemnation or self-doubt. I’ve been realizing lately, however, that there are some biblical truths that we need to understand that should help to lift us out of such a condition.

Last week, a great evangelist and pastor to millions died who many of us knew as Billy Graham. He was America’s pastor and gospel preacher for as long as most of us have been alive. One of the major news networks played a snippet of an interview in 1992 in which he was asked if he still “looked forward to death because it would be freedom from bondage.” He said he surely did because he was bound by this body, by thoughts he shouldn’t have, and by all kinds of bondages that we have as human beings. I thought, the great Billy Graham, even as an older well-experienced brother, still had issues with “this life that is dominated by sin and death,” as Paul says (Rom. 7:24). Who knew? Another popular Christian pastor, Charles Stanley, says that sometimes there are seasons in our life that we as Christians feel that we “are failing more than succeeding at obeying the Lord.” We will never be totally free from sin, but we can at least have some victory over our wrongful desires and bad habits.

The problem, as Paul reveals in Romans 7, is that there is a constant battle between what I want to do as a Christian who tries to live righteously and what I hate to do as a human being with a sinful nature. Paul says that there is a law of sin that works within us that is against the law of good in our minds. The diagnosis, therefore, to our human condition is that as long as we are living in our human bodies, the law of sin will continually plague us. This is what Billy Graham was trying to tell us in that interview in 1992.

But there is also Romans 8, in which Paul says that “there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus “because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” (v. 2) This reveals to us that there is also a higher law, the law of the “Spirit who gives life,” who also works in us “in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” (v.4) The key to having this righteous expression in our living is in the following verses: “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.” (vs. 5-6) Are our minds being governed by the Spirit? Or are we setting our minds on the things of the flesh and not what the Spirit desires? Where our mind is being set is the key to living a holy life and thus fulfilling what God desires. But how do we even know what the Spirit desires? The answer is in the Word of God, when enlightened by what we read, causes us to set our mind on God’s truth and not on the things of the flesh and sin. Our minds need to be full of God’s truth in His word!

God’s word says that “our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with that we should no longer be slaves to sin” (Rom. 6:6) and that God through Christ has created for us a “new self” “to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Eph. 4:24) In Galatians 2:20, Paul also reveals to us that it is no longer him, the believer, who lives, but Christ who lives in him and that “The life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” The Christian life is not about self-effort or self-improvement, but as Charles Stanley says, it is about “self-replacement.” We have been crucified with Christ, and the life that we now seek to live is Christ’s life within us, which is our new nature that He has created in us. This is the key to living a righteous, holy life, free from sin and the flesh. This truth, with the practice of setting our minds on the things of the Spirit through God’s word, will bring us victory over our sinful flesh. We need more to appreciate what the word says He has done for us. In this, we trust in Him and succeed in obeying Him more.
